Terrific Lens ~ 2 Lenses in One (Portrait / Wildlife)t

I've had this great lens for about a year, but have barely used it. Mostly, I've used it for family gatherings, and only one event. I've found this lens delightful for portraiture, same as everyone else has:

My Dad

My fiancé

Shooting the D5600

Typical, bored, indoor test shot

At the suggestion of a member here, however, I've experimented with some Kenko Extension Tubes, giving me both closer proximity as well as greater reproduction ratio. The following values I secured through Cambridge In Color:

  • 105mm + 12mm Ext. = .24x / 26.2-in (665.5mm) MFD
  • 105mm + 20mm Ext. = .32x / 22.5-in (571.3mm) MFD
  • 105mm + 36mm Ext. = .43x / 19.6-in (497.2mm) MFD
  • 105mm + 48mm Ext. = .59x / 17.7-in (450.5mm) MFD
  • 105mm + 56mm Ext. = .66x / 17.2-in (437.8mm) MFD

Since I don't do much portraiture (being a nature photographer), the liberation I've experienced by adding extension tubes to this exceptionally sharp, exceptionally exquisite lens has added new dimensions to my photography:

Coast Oak Florets ...

Southwest Desert Cacti

Riverbank Lupine

Hummingbird Sage

Orange Bush Monkey Flower

As great as this lens has proven to be as a portrait lens, IMO it is an even better "wildlife macro" lens ... with just a wee bit of extension tubes added.
