I think the pictures work fine for the mood. I wouldn't lighten them either.

In my experience, a well-exposed picture should be editable in-camera to the desired jpeg look (positive film, for example), close enough to the target look that one can then just use the resulting camera jpeg as input to whatever 3rd party editor works for further adjustments.

If it's not, rather go out and take a better picture; at least that's what I have chosen to learn...
