I thought that was just a strange rainbow

That's what I thought the first time. I thought it could have been a fog bow, but the phenomenon reappeared in subsequent photos, and it is becoming more frequent.

Why do you think it is the shutter?

Because it is present in faster shutter speeds and not present in longer. The curve of the 'bow' seems to be under the position of a linkage joint which activates the shutter. Possibly there is a light leak there.

If you are happy with the D750 for your work, why not just buy a replacement D750? The price would be more attractive and you are already familiar with using it.

True. Or just get it repaired.

The D780 does being some new things to the table but, are you going to need/use them (e.g. the video features)?

Not really.

Personally, if I were considering the D780 instead of another D750, I would pay the extra 30% and get a D850 ($1,500 vs $2,300 vs $3,000).

That's a good idea.
