It took me some time to find the C2 button ... and with your advice it was easy to reassign it to AF Range Control

Briefly I thought when I moved the camera around it was showing yellow lights when I held the camera over anything at the correct [focused for] distance ... but now the yellow lights are just staying on no matter where I hold the camera.

Also why wouldn't I use the C1 button instead if I am used to it?

Yes that's the whole point of activating it. To see the AF points at all times. If you find it distracting you can always deactivate my pressing C2 again.

Choosing AF-C doesn't affect AF Range control in my testing.

You can use C1 or whichever button you fancy.
