Hi Steve,

Take your engineer's hat off and put your artist's hat on. MTF charts are great at telling you how sharp a lens is in the center and in the corners. Sharpness is just one attribute of an image. The overall look a lens produces including it's bokeh is what is important. Compare the Fuji 80mm macro to the Fuji 90mm and the 80mm is sharper yet the 90mm has a magic the 80mm can't replicate.

Sharpness or contrast? I don’t believe that measuring contrasts is equivalent to measuring sharpness. It is possible for an image to have less contrast, but more sharpness. I have seen this happen. I believe that contrast is a good measure of sharpness only when you are getting one lens in focus, but it is not a very good indicator for comparing sharpness of different lenses. To see how it is possible one can reduce contrast of a very sharp image in post and the image will still remain just as sharp as it was initially (though it will start loosing detail). I understand sharpness as a lack of image blur. In other words you can’t add blur by reducing sharpness.
