Having edited hundreds of hours of video on Macintosh computers I would recommend keeping a lot more than 10% of your hard disk free. Not only will your computer slow down but your editing system will start to make what  look like mistakes.

Keeping 25 percent free will make your life much easier.

The fuller the disk the slower the process, an external drive might be useful. Also, depending on your edit software, you might be able to import at low res, edit then re-import just the edited clips at high res.
