Multimedia: LG is the king, do you agree?
Mar 6, 2020
I'll start by saying im in no way interested in mobile as my main stills camera, i use mine for an occasional snap to remember something for later like a store price ect. For video however i use mine quite often, although low light still lags behind ILC. But they have OIS now (almost all flagships?), rez is very high (all offer 4k by now) and in good light, noise is a non-issue. I think all current flagships shoot 4k in HDR as well, my 1 gen old V40 does too.
I also happen to want a cinematic look much less for video than i do stills, i often don't mind very wide DOF, which makes cutting edge AF less important. Here's where LG comes in for me. I have an LGV40, had the 30+ before that and the LG G5 before that. Had an Iphone8+ mixed in too, and a dozen others in the past (Samsung, HTC, Nokia).
For starters, LG still offers a headphone jack, and they also offer a very high end system to control and monitor audio (monitoring, gain adjustments and cutoff), which means i can monitor my audio while ALSO using a battery pack (or simply use headphones while charging the phone). They also offer full manual controls for stills, full manual for video (although not on the tele camera or WA on my V40) and offer a 10 bit flat profile for the main camera in 1080p or 4k.
The newest from LG is the V50 which is a step ahead of my V40 and i'll be upgrading in about 4mo. But my V40 already allows me to shoot (main camera) HDR10 in 4k, and you can adjust bit rate, 24/30/60fps, and with hifi audio. One improvement of the V50is focus peaking during video for MF users. Add to this a quad DAC for audiophiles who love their music and you have a brand that doesn't get the credit it deserves.
IMO LG has been pushing the envelope for a while now but the LG V50 looks to have taken the industry by the sack and is running away with the multimedia crown, albeit quietly (plus it's a 5G phone). A tube search turns up a lot of people talking about the V50, here's one titled LG V50 Review: The Monster Sleeper Phone of 2019.
The V60 should be out soon as well. Think another brand/line is better for multimedia? Feel free to explain why and share opinions.
