Only Nikon marketing department has to worry, how new models fit in the line up. As a customer, check out the cameras available in the store, make a check list, whether it has the features you need and decide whether you need it. There is so much speculation about unsubstantiated rumors that Nikon might actually misinterpret as a customer need for new models.

Please Nikon, keep the Z6 and Z7 current by updating firmware instead of releasing new models. That approach may have worked for Sony in the past, but the next iterations will drip to the market much slower.

I expect they will keep the Z6 & Z7 in addition to the Z8, but eventually they will evolve to "m2" cameras. You can do a lot with software, to a point, but software can't do everything.

Apple releases a new version of macOS every year, and it's kind of like getting a new Mac in a way. But there's always a point where older hardware either doesn't support certain features or gets dropped from macOS support altogether, because the hardware just can't keep up. Same thing with iOS.

I don't know that Nikon will do ongoing firmware upgrades on a regular (or irregular) schedule for as long as Apple does, but at some point they'll release a Z6m2 & Z7m2 because there will be things they simply can't do with the Z6 & Z7 and that do require new hardware. I imagine at, or soon after or before, that point they'll stop updates to the Z6 & Z7 and focus entirely on the m2 versions.

(Also, is "that approach" really working that well for Sony? As Thom Hogan has written at least a few times, Sony's camera lineup is kind of a mess with old and current and really old hardware versions from all their different model iterations still on the market. Nikon should definitely avoid that kind of mess where, if they followed Sony's method, the Z7m2 would go to 60MP and the Z7 at 45MP would be effectively obsoleted but stay on the market in m1 guise, falling further and further behind the state of the art. There's room for both a 45MP Z7 and a 60MP Z8 in the market, I think, and it seems like Nikon may think so too. And doing it that way avoids the Sony product line mess they've created for themselves.)
