I don’t see any Z series camera being an equivalent of the D5/D6 cameras right now or in the future. A major distinction is that these cameras are about speed. Increasing the megapixels is going to hinder a camera’s speed capabilities. The Z8, if rumors are correct on the 60mb, is not a D5/D6 (or sports camera) equivalent but simply a pro landscape camera.

You’re right, the Z8 is not going to be a D6 equivalent. The D6 equivalent will be a Z9 and it won’t be out till late summer early fall 2021.

I have to wonder how much face was lost by not having a Z line A9 competitor ready for the Tokyo Olympics...

Zero.

Because the people shooting those events have been using the Canon and Nikon flagship DSLRs forever and they don't really care.

We will see eventually more a9 cameras at top tier sporting events not because people are switching but because people are moving up from the lower tier bodies up to the a9.

So for Nikon, the question is how soon and how well they can release an a9 competitor now that we've the Z6 for almost two years now for us current and future owners to move up to.

They don’t need an A9 competitor, they will need a mirrorless D6 competitor, eventually. But the A9 isn’t the same class of camera.
