How do they fix front/back focus hardware on a Nikon DSLR?

My wet D800 got repaired, the repairman didn't bother to test it as far as it seems, I figured whatever then lens it needs a +20 focus adjustment, I called back and they told me to bring it back as it is easily fixable, this time will get them a lens too so that they will hopefully bother to test it before I go pick it up again.

Just wondering what do they adjust, is it a hardware issue or matter of software (in this case I am talking about a D800)?
