What counts to get a sharp image

By order of importance :

1. Shutter speed: 1/twice the FF focal. Also, some bizarre phenomenon are happening with cameras equipped with IBIS at higher shutter speed.

2. Clean back element of lens: VERY important, the slightest dust / scratch / dirt has consequences

3. Clean sensor

4. Avoiding when possible sources of light in the field; use of sun hood.

5. Aperture used: full aperture is rarely optimum

6. ISO: high values means more noise and less details

7. Clean front element

8. Finally, brand and model of lens.

I am a little bit obsessive-compulsive. Sometimes, I think that the only criteria to buy a lens are its optical characteristics. Sometimes, like now, that only the usability - weight, focusing, etc. - is important (that's Ken Rockwell point of view, by the way).

How do you select the lenses you want to have?
