Custom white balance and changing outdoor lighting conditions?

Just getting into getting the custom WB on my FX1000.  I was out shooting some animals at my local marsh land preserve.  As it was partly cloudy (about half and half,) sometimes the animals were in full sun, other times they were in partial to cloudy shade.  I made two custom WB settings (one for clouds, one for sun) with my 18% grey card.  Did this so I could switch back and forth as conditions deemed.  I didn't mind this as I was testing the use of custom WB; however, it is my feeling that under such shifting light conditions, using AWB may have been the preferred method?  So, what do you guys have to say?  Thanks.
