eos 350d very slow to shoot - is it broke?

I've got this canon eos 350d and I've never had a dslr before so i'm not sure what to expect.

but i don't think it should take a second or two before the shutter clicks and it takes the picture, should it?

And that wouldn't be the fault of a misconfiguration anywhere would it?

It is set on full auto.

I put the button down half way and get a minute flash of read on one or other of the autofocus points and then I push the button down the rest of the way.

nothing happens.

I push it again - all the way - and still nothing happens.

I push it again and it fires.

Sometimes, I think, when it's only gone half way.

And sometimes, I think, it fires on the second attempt rather than the third.

It all seems very erratic and wrong.

Would you say the thing is broken?

With something not worth fixing - i.e. cost more than the camera is worth?

And the pics seem clouded....  dirty sensors?

Canon EOS 350D (EOS Digital Rebel XT / EOS Kiss Digital N)
