Is most Foveon detail over and above Bayer sensors real detail?

I was considering getting one to experiment with.  A while back, someone commented that the extra detail apparently seen in a Foveon shot wasn't real, it was artifacts peculiar to that sensor that gave the impression of more detail on average than most Bayer cameras.  After looking at least at tests here, it looks to me that the newest Foveons have approximately the same resolution as a Canon R, or a 30mp sensor.  Not as much as the 40-50mp sensors in higher-level cameras.  But also, there does appear to be subtle artifacting happening in Foveon shots that could give the impression of greater sharpness, if not greater resolution.
