Autofocus jumps around when shooting Pointed Down Nikon D810 with Nikor 24-70/f2.8

Hey there. My autofocus jumps around like crazy I noticed whenever I shoot down from directly above my subjects (think of siblings laying on their backs facing up at me or heck, even a flatlay in a food photo situation.) Wondering if this is the weight of the lens straining on the connection to the camera body? I'm like, what the what? It's not good especially when I'm trying so hard to get the angle/plane straight while endeavoring to focus on the subjects' eyes while my settings are wide open (usually 2.8). I just had the lends calibrated and it cost me a bundle. oof.
