Monitor questions/issues

I don't know the best place to post this, so I'll post it here.

I noticed a considerable difference in resolution/image quality between my home computer and the one at work - not surprising, I've have my home monitor a while.
So now I'm thinking, If I were to buy a new monitor, what features do I look for in addition to just size?  Pixels?  refresh rate? color verity?  How are those expressed in specifications, and which qualities are important/worth paying for?
Now the other side of that is, does it matter all that much?  Does a "higher quality" monitor really result in higher quality prints?  In truth, most of us spend a lot more time looking at images during their editing phase, posting electronically somewhere and personally I print very few images (but I like them to come out nice when I do).

So the bottom line is, are high-end monitors worth it for hobbyist/photo enthusiasts (as opposed to graphic artists)?  And if you, what are good recommendations for selecting one?
