How much of a "breakthrough" are you looking for?

The current 5D4 and EOS R are already pretty close to Sony/Nikon throughout their normal range (starting at ISO 100.)  From ISO 160 up they are pretty much identical.

Where SoNikon has an edge is at ISO 50-100, where they have about 1 stop over Canon's ISO 100.  They might have 1/4 stop from 100-160.  So it appears that if there is going to be a "breakthrough," the only likely place for that to happen is if Canon can set a minimum ISO in the 50-100 range with similar performance.  While it would be nice to have that available, ISOs that low get into a pretty specialized range of useage -- landscape, mostly -- and it is not a matter of great importance to me.
