From seed to blossom

I planted seeds in December and January - the soil is cool here in Southern California.

I'm watching the seed produce its embryonic leaves (Cotyledons), then form the true leaves, more stems with leaves, and finally the first bloom.

Cotyledons usually come in pairs:

Arroyo Lupine, native to California

The Cotyledons provide nourishment for the true leaves from nutriments stored in the seed.

It's quite enlightening to follow the cycle of plant growth.
