Starting in August, Topaz Upgrades are going to cost you

Eric, the Topaz CEO, sent users an e-mail today outlining Topaz's new pricing structure. There is a link attached to the e-mail, which I have already read and wanted to re-link it here, but that link no longer connects. Once the whole statement is available again, I will link it in this thread.

Basically when you buy a Topaz AI product, you will get one year of free upgrades. After the first year, it will cost $49.99 for an additional year. If you have additional AI products, you can bundle them in a one year upgrade for $99.99. Current owners of AI products will receive free upgrades until August 2020, then upgrades will only be available to those who want to pay for them (for an additional year).

Eric goes on about the reasons for this business decision and I can see his point. But I have two reservations. The first is that Topaz better really step it up with their upgrades now that they will be charging for them. Sending out upgrades that MUST be beta-tested by the user community MUST become a thing of the past. Get it right the first time, Topaz. And second, $99.99??? Now Topaz is very good at the products they come up with, but $99.99 a year is almost as much as a year subscription to the Adobe Photography Plan. Granted, you can still use Topaz products for life after buying them (Topaz is not a subscription service, so the user license does not end if you do not upgrade), but Topaz is also still no Adobe Photography Plan.

So, supporters of Topaz, what do you think? And, of course, those who like to complain about Topaz, have your say as well.
