Thickness does not affect index of refraction...

Plastic has lower index of refraction which decreases CA without the need for additives.

What's the point of resisting scratch when it's inside the housing and doesn't ever come in contact with anything else?

What superior optical properties? You haven't answered the question except with some false assumptions.
