One needs to keep in mind this is in no way trying to compete with the likes of a long Prime lens. It's a "convenience" lens in decent light. For that indeed it should be a very valuable addition. f7.1 is no big deal in broad daylight let alone later in the day type light even handheld. Remember Canon's intention is to have the body IBIS providing over 5 stops of stabilization on it's own. With the lens more likely closer to 7 stops. If you're trying to shoot birds you'd end up tweaking the ISO anyway if you're looking to stop action. Otherwise you'll need to shell out for a faster prime. I feel the design and optical advantages of the newer RF's will imbue a overall superior result of this lens over the 100-400EF.
