Wow, I think you’re the first person I’ve ever heard of who has been dreaming of a f/7.1 500mm lens. 🤣

I also was "dreaming" the same , and I was dreaming white L

The 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 is  equivalent to a 100-400mm 4.5-5.6F with an embedded 1.25X extender always active

I’m torn between the Canon 100-400mm and the Sigma 60-600mm, the first is lighter, more compact and sharper even with the 1.4 extender (but at F8), the second is more versatile with a 10X zoom, but the weight difference ad the size are way less practical , now this 100-500mm, if it proves  to be on par or better than the 100-400mm it's the solution, unless it 's much more expensive than the 100-400m, but I think it should be placed on the same price range.

Canon with this new L and also the consumer grade zoom at F7.1 is telling us that one sensor (FF) does it all, no need for crop (even if I think Canon will also be committed to the 1.6x APSC)

Do you want fast? Canon  has exclusive F2 zooms (or F1.2 primes) do you want "lightweight"? Canon has this new range of F7.1 zooms.

The 100-400mm F4.5-7.1 is equivalent to APSC 62-309mm F2.8-4.5 and m4/3 50-250mm F2.2-3.5mm, just crack the ISO one or two stops more for the same exposure values, obviously Canon is confident that the new AF will have no problem with such apertures, the 100-500mm is (also) for birders and the AF  should be fast at 20fps.
