The easiest way is to redesign the current EF mount lens as RF mount lens, by making the barrels longer in place of an adaptor, resulting in a collection of lens that is slightly longer and heavier. However, until Canon sells substantially more R bodies than DSLR, they will only be available in EF mount.

Both Sigma and Tamron have a line of lens for Sony FE mount. Putting them in RF mount can take advantage of the shorter flange distance. Given both companies know how to build AF lens for Canon EF mount, it is easy to release them as Canon RF mount. To a Canon R body, they will appear as a 3rd party EF mount lens on an adaptor. These will most likely be the first native RF mount lens available. Samyang is already doing it.

None of these can take advantage of the larger RF mount diameter or the high speed link provided by the two extra pins. I will not hold my breath on these type of designs.

...see why people would get these RF lenses if they already have the existing EF lens. I think, however, there's some feature (high speed display?) that only works for RF lenses, though, so it might have the advantage of that. Would be expensive just for that option, though.

RF lenses are either smaller (24-105s, 35 1.8) or way better (F/1.2s, F/2.8 zooms etc). I would def have traded the EF 35/2 for the RF 35 1.8. I imagine someone with the ancient EF 50 1.2 would be interested in the cutting edge RF version. The new 24-105 STM looks about half the size of the EF one with an adapter. Etc. There are reasons

I meant RF lenses that are merely EF lenses with extensions and an RF mount. Not newly designed lenses for RF mount.

If such lenses existed I could see this being an issue but from what I've seen every RF lens is a brand new and generally much improved design.

Remember, I was replying to the text I highlighted in bold above.

I think the only place where RF glass might not be worth it is in the exotic tele realm. But I don't even know if Canon will update any of those five figure EF lenses. They will probably sell a "high speed adapter" and save on those development costs.

A high speed adapter with control ring would be very cool. But, not knowing why the high speed function requires RF mount in the first place, such a thing may not even make sense.

Canon's way pushing users to the RF mount.  Sony has a similar tactic by slowing down  framerate and not allowing PDAF for video.
