The OP's example was shot at f/5.6, the 18-55's sharpest aperture, not wide open. It really ought to be able to manage more uniform sharpness across the image than what we're seeing here. The left side looks noticeably worse than the right to me and shouldn't be acceptable at any aperture.

Thanks Erik. I'm by no means a pixel-peeping perfectionist, and have generally been happy even with super-zooms for most general photography on my other systems, but what I'm seeing with this lens is much worse, and feels unacceptable to me.
