Re: A Decent Baseline for Assigning Button? // 'Pit stop' of my settings

This discussion made me eventually question my habits and review my assignments. So thank you folks!

Clearly, what I use most often is the ISO setting. Consequently, it is better to assign this function to a button (until recently, I had it only in the Q menu).

My new assignment is:

  • Fn = Self timer - application: sometimes shock free shutter in macro or tripod photography. But in these cases I more often use the electronic shutter or my remote shutter (RR-100). So, self timer is not so important, the assignment of that button could be replaced if need be.
  • Fn2 = Face/eye detection setting. I do not use face detection often because it does not always work with the X-T20. But when I want it, I want to be able to activate it quickly!
  • NEW: Fn3 = ISO. Clearly my most frequently changed setting!
  • Fn4 = AF mode
  • Fn5 = Focus area - to quickly enter AF area selection mode
  • AE-L = AE-L
  • AF-L = Preview Exp./WB for flash photography - cf. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/63547167.

Film simulation went to the Q menu. Why? - I always shoot in jpeg + raw so film simulation is not that important for me. I can always change later with X-Raw Studio or Silkypix or darktable / 3D LUT which is my preferred converter.

My current Q menu. My three most frequently used settings in this menu are (i) film simulation, (ii) shutter mode (shock free shutter for macro or tripod photography or silent shutter for concerts or some events), and (iii) photometry.

Page 1 of my current "My menu". Also here, it is about three most often used functions. I frequently use manual lenses, so the mount adaptor setting went to #1. With flash, I want to be able to quickly switch between FP and Front, so this went to #2 (though I am not so sure whether I cannot just leave it on FP). Wireless for GPS recording or camera remote control went to #3.

For mount adaptor setting, see this thread .

My touch screen is always on "AF". So I can quickly change the position of the box and compensate for the missing joystick or be even faster than a joystick.

For an idea how to remember your settings, see this recent thread.

My philosophy is to be fast with all those settings that affect the raw image. All the 'jpeg only stuff' can be sorted out later!

Cheers,
