A lot depends on the focal length. I agree with you that 50mm (on crop), which gets you to traditional portrait length is usually too close for children. They move too quickly and often you want to get more in the image.

You could look at the 40mm 2.8 STM with the adaptor. Unfortunately, a little slow but outstanding image quality and inexpensive. Also compact and light.

I'm not sure what third party options would work.

Any other Canon option is going to be in the 32mm 1.4 M price range and, at that point, you ought to buy the M.
