The fourth camera in Leica's SL series of full-frame mirrorless cameras sees the 60MP BSI sensor from the Q3 and M11 models arrive with a significant interface redesign.
Why I love my R as a travel camera
For my personal liking, I have found the R to be a really nice travel camera:
- A mirrorless camera with sensor protection for lens changes ! That's absolutely huge, as my Sony friends complain about their dust magnets. My R has been sensor clean for months ! I always power off my camera during a camera change, and the shutter guard ensures that the sensor is not exposed when I switch lenses. For travel photography, that protection is a gift.
- The EVF works really well in low light. It's almost like an infra-red scope (it's not) but it's amazing to use. For night work, I flip the screen so it's not exposed and I'm able to avoid a lot of attention.
- OTG backup. Ok, so this is not really about the R. I use a USB hub that is controlled by my phone. I plug in my SD card, and copy my images to one of several 256G flash drives. Very, very compact solution for travel backup.
- Charging the battery. The LP-E6N allows direct charging to the battery, via USB C. Provided that the power bank has a power delivery port (PD). Also, the R battery is not the lightweight offering found in the RP, so the life is decent. And, I can use my LP-E6 batteries from my 6D.
- EF compatibility and RF futureproofing. By this, I am stating the obvious, that there are hundreds of EF lens, hundreds more by way of adapters, and the RF lens.
- The LCD screen is flip out and flip-to-hide, I can shoot from the waist, overhead and even hold it in a vlogging pose. It's very configurable.
- The silent "stealth" shutter mode. It's so very nice not to have a clattering shutter when I'm in a cathedral or a quiet dining location. After a minute of being silent, I'm quickly ignored, and I'm capturing many more candid moments.
- The size is a good fit for me, not like a Pentax K-1 II (which does have the weatherproofing edge). I can have the R with me pretty easily, at all times.
For me, I'm really enjoying the R for travel. It wasn't why I purchased it, but I'm finding that it's a reliable companion.
