One thing that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is that, with most lenses, E mount cameras open the aperture for initial focus acquisition in dim light even in AF-C. It's only after initial acquisition that they stop back down. The "concern" about stopped down AF/AE is only when you have acquired focus, held it, and then have difficulty keeping a tracking lock on the moving subject.

Is that what you're seeing? I would not expect this to be the case for group portraits in low light... unless, maybe, they're unwilling subjects?
