Bayer vs. X-Trans III
4

Ok, I thought I'd have another look at this. I've done this before and my opinion hasn't really changed. The X-Trans IV sensor is faster than the older X-Trans III, but it isn't better. I sent my X-T3 back because my X-T2 outperformed it in most of the areas I thought most important. Here are the X-A5 and X-H1 files side by side, and while the Bayer sensor wins in some areas, especially fine text and the bank note, the X-Trans wins in others, the etching and the green stuff in particular. In my opinion, another area where the Bayer wins, at least with this image is moire, yes, moire. There is more obvious moire in the Bayer image, but the moire in the X-Trans image is more invasive and blurs areas with fine color detail. I cleaned up most of it in both images. I also tried to match the WB and exposure a bit better than the default settings were providing, and since these are both natively 6000x4000 pixels, we have a more level playing field for comparison here. To my eyes, both sensors are fine - one's a bit better here the other's a bit better there. Both of these are better than either SOOC jpeg. I still think the X-Trans image "looks" a tad better at "normal' magnification, but as I said earlier, I would have no problem if Fuji ditched X-Trans at this point.
