My point is that a 1MP picture scaled up will look horrible, but a 16MP picture scaled up will be indistinguishable from a native resolution picture on a 8K TV.
From my tests with 4K, that 1MP image scaled up looks good at normal viewing distance, at 2 feet away I can see that it's 1MP. Just checked my good test image is actually 1.2MP and it looks great, when I crop to fit better it would be 1MP and still looks great.
There's a point of diminishing returns, and we've reached it.
The returns diminish when you get too close to the screen. Sit back at beer and pop-corn consuming distance and images from 1MP to 100MP will look just fine on that lovely new 8K TV.
The TV shops advise that best viewing is from 1.5 times the screen height and that is ludicrous, it's simply far too close for normal viewing and patently stupid for two or more people. Though the "experts" seem to say 2x height is acceptable. https://www.tomsguide.com/us/choose-right-tv-size,news-24708.html then they work backwards and calculate from where you sit normally and then decide what size screen to buy for that close up and "immersive" experience.
Bad advice for anyone prone to vertigo, the "immersive" viewing experience can be quite a challenge with some movie material.
Again it's all personal preference, just now measured my room and I find that I sit at 9 feet from my 43 inch 4K TV and my wife hates being that close so has moved her chair to 12 feet away. Any closer and she does not like it. If I bought an 88 inch 8K TV she would probably have to sit in the next room and I would need to remove the intervening wall.
My point being that at those comfortable normal human viewing distances then about 1MP to 2MP images look perfect, no need to go to higher resolution.
If you bought an 8K TV then any slide show for it would be perfectly OK at say 2K resolution, that certainly saves storage space on the memory stick.
A similar issue is with movie houses, my local movie house uses 2K projection and when I asked the owner about that, he said in Sydney he did see a comparison run with a general audience comparing two screens, one running the movie at 2K and the other showing it at 4K and people could not tell the difference.
As always, the push for more MP is always about marketing trying to sell you more stuff that you don't need. No wonder the planet is in terminal decay.

I agree Guy that those distances don't seem right. I sit 10 ft from my 40 inch TV and that seem correct to me (except for reading small print).
Sitting too close is like sitting in the front row of a picture theater and havcing to turn your head to see what on the left or right of the screen. Also the screen seems too bright at a close distance which can be uncomfortable.
Good to know that low quality video still looks good on a large screen.
