- as you suggested, any evf would have to be very small. But maybe the quality could be enhanced without drawing too much power or taking too much space? Those small evfs on cameras like the LX100 and ZS100 are minimally useful, but not only due to size. More resolution at the same size would be an improvement.

Isn't the EVF on the Sony RX100 series quite a bit better than the one on the GX's (excluding GX8)? I'm pretty sure it's also smaller as well. And if that's the case than Panasonic should be able to update the EVF without much design problems considering Sony did this almost 6 years ago...

The RX100 VII has a viewfinder with 2.3M dots, same as the GX9. The RX100 magnification is 0.59, vs 0.7 on the GX9. I don’t think the RX is OLED. It also requires being popped up. The GX9 tilts.

So I really don’t see how the RX EVF is better in even one single way, let alone overall. Quite simply, the GX9 just suffers from bad press. It’s a totally decent VF for its class (vs the X-T30, X-E3, X-Pro 3, a6400, a6600 etc). Ok, maybe field sequential tech disturbs some people’s (Gordon Laing’s) eyes, and it’s 16x9. Big deal. The a6600 LCD is 16x9. That’s far more egregious IMO.

Never use RX100 nor A6600, it is a piece of interesting information because on their spec sheet, the 16:9 aspect ratio of A6600's evf is not mentioned.

As per spec sheet from DPR, RX100-VII has an evf, non OLED of 0.59x and 2.36M dots.

A6600 has an evf, also non OLED of 0.71x of 2.36M dots. If it is on 16:9, under 3:2 its viewable size will reduce to 0.57x of 1.9M dot. (If at 4:3 it will become 0.51x of 1.7M dots although it should not be shoot in 4:3).

The evf of GX7/85/9 in 16:9 native aspect ratio is 0.7x of 2.76M dot. Under 4:3, around 12.5% on both edge would be back out, so the viewable area will reduce to 0.53x of 2.1M dots. Marginally larger than A6000's 0.51x (if on 4:3) or slightly smaller on 3:2 native still shooting, and has more resolution on both.

If shooting in full resolution, the evf of GX7/85/9 is indeed larger and has more detail than that of RX100-VII.
