I do a bunch of indoor (some outdoor) figure skating of my daughter and tested the various Nikon DX bodies and lenses. The body and lens that I have settled on for photographing her is the Nikon D7500 with the Tamron 70-210/4 VC (with Haoge LMR-TL721 tripod collar).

I ended up renting and borrowing equipment to see what worked for me and figure skating. The D7100 was a problem with the buffer size. The D7200 does a great job too, but was edged out by the D7500 with the group autofocus. The Nikon D3300/D3400 just didn't quite have the focus and handling I was looking for with the lighting, speed of skaters, and camera controls. The Nikon D5200, D5300, and D5600 did better but not quite what I was looking for.

I tried a bunch of lenses including the Nikon AF-P 70-300 (not the VR model), AF-S 70-300 VR, 55-300 VR, 18-140 VR, 18-200 VR, Tamron 70-200/2.8 VC G2, 18-270 VC PZD, 28-300 VC, 16-300 VC, Sigma 100-300/4, 100-400 OS, 18-300 OS, and some others.

With the Tamron 70-210/4 VC the f4 for depth of field and light gathering was helpful. The 70-200/2.8 VC G2 was great, but weighed more, ended up getting shot at f4 due to depth of field and cost more. Great lens, not what I was wanting for figure skating.

Being indoors, you figure out your desired iso, shutter speed and aperture, set the camera and go. The light is not going to change so no reason to mess with the settings. Get a monopod as this makes the photos better. VR/VC/OS is nice, but the monopod is the key. Afterwards, just pass the photos through your noise software and do the other edits.

I'm looking at a D7200 with a Nikkor 18-200 mm zoom , 3.5 -5.6 G2 ED VR.

This would be for baseball and maybe some indoor swimming in not so dark situations plus my take everywhere lens.

What do you thinK? What was your impression of the 18-200 VR lens?
