The battery I mentioned is why the date doesn't blink, etc. when you remove the primary battery.

I was referring to the primary battery, not the watch battery, being stone cold dead. Because the OP said "Canon rebel SL1 NO POWER".

I don't know if newer cameras even use replaceable watch type batteries to maintain clock and other internal data.  I thought they used some kind of internal rechargeable battery.

I try to recharge all my rechargeable batteries every six, or so, months.  Especially for the older cameras that I'm not currently using.
