Note that AI Servo is Canon's name for continuous AF. Other companies call it AF-C or C-AF.

So Chris,

If I hold the back button focus down while panning as Lee recommended, am I working at cross purposes with the AI Servo's continuous focusing? Are they fighting each other, or working in harmony?

There is only one focusing system which can either work in single shot mode or in continuous mode.  You can't use them both simultaneously.

BBF is not an alternative to AI Servo, it is an alternative to using the shutter release button to activate/lock the focusing system.
