When in DMF the tracking option is not available which I always use.

Finding another object at the same focal plane is indeed one way to find focus. But I find it strange that the camera doesn't see the branch. I don't remember having this problem with any of my previous camera's A77/A77II/Canon 6D/760D/ ... with Tamron and Sigma 150-600 zooms.

I do wonder why you'd want to just focus on a thin branch if out birding though...usually the bird will present a much better target for the focus.

Sometimes when I'm bored I want to check my exposure or I want to see how many meters the branch is with the digital scale in the camera.

If I know the bird is always on the same branch I want to be already in focus not to miss the shot.
