changing light with the seasons

I'd like to understand the effect on aperture requirements, number of stops that exists between me shooting in mid December and mid June at midday.  I am at 52 deg N but I'd like the ability to understand how I can evaluate this wherever I am.  Also I'd like to understand the difference between light availability at 0600 and 1800 in say midsummer.  Are there any resources, books, internet etc that can teach me about how light availability varies between time of day and seasons and also explains why evening and morning light is different.
