What proportion of scene captured by FX does DX capture?

I've been trying to compare FX and DX. A D850 has 45 megapixels. A D500 has 20.

The DX crops, or only partly captures, what an FX captures. So the 20 megapixels of the DX are dedicated to only part of what the 45 megapixels are in the FX cover. So it's not as if 20 megapixels are distributed over the same scene area as the 45 are.

So if you think about pixels per unit of area of the scene, how do I figure out the density of pixels in the FX and DX for a given area of the scene? Does the FX actually cover twice as much scene as the DX? Is so, the density and resolution would be close.

45 megapixels sounds like 2.25 times the resolution or pixel density of the 20 megapixels, but since the DX is not covering the same area, then what is the density of of the two formats in reality?

Did that totally confuse anyone as much as me?

Thanks.
