CPL, determining maximum-effect position is difficult.

In days of yore (circa 1970) the polarizers I used had short handles sticking out their sides. Some filters had no handle but had a dot to indicate the position of a handle if there were one. Point the handle toward the sun (or 180 degrees away from the sun) and this gave maximum effect.

I see no markings on my B+W filters and sometimes determining best position maximum effect is difficult. It was much easier when they were marked.

So, what gives?  Why no mark?

In case it matters, all my polarizers are B+W.
