What sharpness does to detail

I often hear about which lens is sharper. How much sharper certain lens or brand is. How much a sharper lens will always help. That the lens by con is softness. But I see very few examples of what it looks like to shot fine detail, and maybe wonder if sharpness is overrated.

Here's black test shot with an old lens, and what "sharpness" does for you at 24MP. Obviously, at 42MP we might just about see the same.

1:1 crop - A7II (with Anti Alias Filter) + 1963 Orestor 50/1.8 (a $30 lens) @f2.8

The label is white with all black texts. I re-scaled up 4X the center crop (Nearest Neighbor), so you can appreciate the effects of sharpness.
