Are returns killing the industry?

Is returning a new lens or camera body to the retailer within the prescribed period just because you don't like it killing the photographic retail business?

It must be fantastically expensive to repack all that gear, and where necessary to write off the scuffed or damaged items.

People on this forum take the line, 'Oh you can always return it' even when the item is not defective. Seems a bit unethical to me.

What do you think?
