Well, you can spend time playing with a new camera or spend time playing with your baby. Combined with the lack of sleep you won't have time for both.

Most cheap point and shoots are good enough. Heck, most phones are good enough.

Unless, that is, you're hoping learning a new camera will keep you busy so you can avoid changing diapers. It happens.

And the arguments about needing a good lens for pictures of the kid playing soccer? By the time your kid is playing sports there will be new technology.

Spend time playing with the kid. Not photographing it. Don't be the parent who hides behind the viewfinder.

I can't echo this enough really. When my first daughter came along I thought I'd invest in a 50mm 1.8 lens to have a fast light lens on a medium weight body (Pentax K7). Thinking I'd be taking photos of my girls daily.

The vast majority of photos taken in that first year? Took em on my smartphone. I simply didn't have the time to run and grab the camera and didn’t need to because I had one in my pocket. I had a 5 plus year interest in photography so owned a DSLR and several lenses and a flash unit and found myself shooting with a HTC one camera.

In the end I found that the best camera was the one on you. And my printing didn't surfer one bit because I managed to print every image of her that went to Flickr from my phone and my camera in an A4 photo book and they look fantastic even at 8x10 in it or full page A4.

I'm not advocating not going for either of those two cameras and if you have the means then most definitely take that leap into an amazing hobby, hone the skills and your eye and then when your kid is up a bit you'll be able to reap the benefits, but don't underestimate what's in your pocket.
