I have a bunch of crop sensor cameras over the years back to 2000 and the 10D. My most recent are the 70D body and then the when I got a great price deal I bought the 7D. The 70D I thought was actuallly fast enough for my kids sport but once I decided to get it I loved the amazing speed of the 7D and I loved the speed.
I acquired a number of L series lenses including prime lenses but the 16-35f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 were my most frequently used and preferred lenses but I also had and used the EF24-70mmf2.8 some.
However, I always wanted a full frame sensor and many the lenses I bought were ff capable. However, I took a good price on the EOS 5D Mk IV to get me to act. I immediately loved the the power of the ff sensor. Lowlight performance and cropping freedom were important feature advances the EOS 5D offers. It is pretty for my use but not as fast the 7D. I was really quite happy with using the 5D and 7D.
Then I learned about the new EOS R and new line of high performance RF lenses. I bought the EOS R along with the RF 15-35mm and RF 35-70mm expensive lenses and a couple of other cheaper lenses.
I bought the camera primarily because I had seen on the forums that there is great user enthusiasm for the new camera, and it's electronic viewfinder. I believed it along with the advanced RF lenses was the future of photography. I also could use the EOS R with the lens adapter to enable continuing using my many EF lenses that I had come to own and love.
I learned how to use the EOS R quickly and easily since it is very similar to my older cameras except it is different in having a lot fewer buttons while using more reliance on the touch screen and the menus. The increased use of the touch screen however was inituitive and quick for me to learn.
I do like the EVF of the EOS R for the ease of finding the best exposure correction in challenged lighting situations. I enjoy the smaller compact sized in comparison to the DSLRs when carrying the camera around such as on hikes. It is an a excellent high quality and high performance portrait camera ideal for taking pictures of events as well as family, andscape and touring pictures.
The EOS R is not as fast in continuous high speed shooting as the EOS 5D and the EOS 7D. I prefer the EOS 5D because of the speed combined with the benefits of full frame for many sporting wildlife events and the 7D for the most speed intensive photography.
When focus tracking is used the EOS R shoots at around 3 fps which slower than EOS 5D and a lot slower than the 7D. It is fast for photographing young athletes but it is not as fast as I would like for high school sports.
I prefer optical of the DSLRs when the action to be photographed is quick since the optical path is available 100% of the time. The EVF can be busy displaying the last image or other screen data at times when i want to see only the subject take at high speed multiple photographs.
The EOS R is great at focusing in lower light situations and its really amazing accurate at getting the focus right very accurately when making large aperture, shallow depth of field shots of subjects close to the camera.
