For close up / "macro" work I'd use the built-in flash with a diffuser and a close up filter Raynox DCR-250. I have tested it with an SX50. It has a good working distance to the subject and in the right distance, the autofocus also works well. This solution is the lightest I found. I consider weight very important when you have to stay in an uncomfortable position because of the subject (like a bug in the garden).

You can use a ring flash, but I wouldn't attach it to the lens, because it's heavy and it might damage the lens mechanism. So you would need to hold the front piece to position the light. It's not comfortable, but you can be creative with the light. If you intend to use TTL, buy a Canon flash. If you use manual flash, you can buy any ring flash compatible with Canon (for example Yongnuo). Third party TTL flash is usually only compatible with DSLRs.

I like to use a speedlite to photograph people or other subjects indoors. I bounce the light on the walls to get softer light.
