With this pattern, consider green light that would otherwise arrive at a green pixel. But this pattern diverts the green light to the adjacent pixels that do not accept green data. Information about color is lost from this green pixel, which is needed for avoiding false color.

The original Bayer design does not discard color data in this way. Some of the green light arriving at any location can always find its way to a pixel that records green data. This even works for red and blue data.
