The problem is that I don't seen things changing with mirrorless cameras. They are always holding back tech.... I don't want to buy the Iphone, but I guess, other smartphone brands, much cheaper, are going to offer the same kind of camera found on the Iphone, but cheaper... I mean, smart phones have better processors, so with better computational photography they will do the impossible... I don't have an Iphone, but my cell phone take good pictures, and to tell you the truth I cannot see much difference in good lighting and if I don't need shallow DOF... Also my smartphone is always with me..
Which phone are you using? My experience isn't the same.
A Xiaomi MI A3. It is not as good, but it has a zoom lens, a wide lens, the 4K video is great, and the stabilization it is also good. What annoys me right now, is that camera brands, aren't taking the same advantage of their better hardware. I'm not talking about Samsung of course, but it is shameful that the Iphone is killing Canon, and Sony. How can a brand such as Canon, with a 2000$ camera, plus lenses isn't much better than a cell phone, in any situation. The stabilization of the Iphone it is great... This doesn't make sense to me...
I don't think that it is better, but that's just my opinion.
I have the Samsung Note 9 and whilst it's not the top end smartphone right now, it's not far off. I find the output to be decent but in a different league to both my NX cameras and my Sony rx100iv. It's not only the IQ though, the Samsung camera app is terrible and has actually got worse. For example you basically have 2 options - full auto or pro mode where you have to adjust everything yourself and lose out on any computational advantages, as well as burst mode and things like that. They've also moved the video record icon so you have to go to a different screen.
I know I could get a better smartphone camera, perhaps like the P30 or even an iPhone. But I don't buy a phone just for the camera and this note 9 has ticked almost all the boxes for me.
I still use it for photography but it'll never replace my dedicated cameras.
I'm in love by the dual exposure tech... I mean, if the software of a cellphone/camera can do much of the work for you out of the box, why not taking advantage of that? The dual exposure both in video, and in photo garantee that you won't blow up details... also the IBIS of the Iphone is crazy good... Did you watch the video? Did you see the Iphone colors, and how the sky looked great, with the clouds, and the superior image in the shade? I just wonder why this tech isn't being used in cameras... I guess, their inferior processor doesn't let it...
Also the AI bokeh in photo/video is getting much better.... with this AI separation of the background it is even possible to key out subjects, right? Without the use of a green screen?
Just watch this:

Now paying 1000$ for a smartphone, it is not for me... but I guess Xiaomi phones, will get there, and they are much better...
I will check it out. I think the day they introduce portrait mode to video and have it working great will be the day I seriously consider changing.
