Here in Canada, staying on 3G (most of the time) has the added bonus for us cranks of not receiving the provincial "Amber Alerts", that that override other phone settings, and have become very controversial for late night or workday disruption, hundreds of miles from where local police trigger it, often over a domestic custody problem. 3G also has stronger signals most places.

Wow, I'm in the UK and have never heard of such alerts!

I live near Los Angeles and we have Amber Alerts. They can be annoying, but I get very few, only one per week, or less. Which is surprising since LA is a big city.
