Yes, they can both achieve out of focus backgrounds. Your example though is not a good comparison though. It is easier to achieve an out of focus background when the subject is close. In the portrait example, the subject is farther away.

Once again though, both lenses are good. The biggest differences are size, WR, aperture, and one is optically corrected vs. software correction for distortion on the f2.

Remember the portrait shot was shot at f/1.8. So that's a 19.4mm aperture vs 17.5mm of 35mm f/2. Just under 1mm difference in radius.

Are you trying to tell me that a 35mm f/2 lens couldn't get a very similar shot?
