I Bought a G9X II in 2017 when it was released and used it extensively. I think it’s an almost perfect camera (if you look at price, size and weight). I especially like how well thought out the user interface is .

The only thing I really hate about it is sloooooow autofocus in video. It almost takes for ever to focus. So sometimes when you shoot video, the first few seconds are not in focus or focus is never achieved at all (especially when you are moving or when you are filming moving subjects)

Interesting what will happen when Canon get hold of a Sony PDAF sensor. They have not invested much effort over the years in to contrast detect so how they will cope with embedded PDAF when all their expertise is in dual pixel is a mystery. Problems like banding and heaven knows what else will need to be addressed.

Difficult to know how Canon can continue in compacts or what they can bring to new models if they are unable to get their own competitive dual pixel 1" sensor.

I bought the G5X Mk I for its particular merits knowing the focusing was the weak point but the rudimentary focusing modes in Canon compacts must come as a shock to many people nowadays.

In a threat that you started a few weeks ago about PDAF I told you that Canon already have a 1 inch sensor (ok, it only 13,4 Mp) with dual pixel AF in the Canon XA50 video camera so I don’t think they will go for PDAF.

i had a look at that but it is heavy stuff. I seem to recall there was a cheaper 1" video camera but it had a loupe which is not to my liking.

If they could get a compact video camera out with an EVF that would be interesting. 13.4 mp is fine.

I didn't suggest to you to buy a video camera. I simply told that canon has a 1 inch sensor with dual pixel AF.

And I had a look at it. I am always open to buying a video camera if it improves on a stills camera. That may be the route Canon takes in the future.

But if they do, they probably already have the know how, how to make PDAF work (being the big company that they are) .

Well they have not really managed a competitive contrast detect big company that they are.

It works just fine for me.

I think that not including PDAF or Dual pixel AF into the Power shot range is a well-considered choice of Canon. (If someone of the canon marketing department is listening please correct me if I’m wrong)

But I’m not complaining about the focus speed while photographing because for what I do it’s usually fast enough. I’m complaining about the focus speed during video. It’s slower than any other contrast detect only camera I have ever used. So for some reason Canon chose to make it slow. I don’t think it has anything to do with the AF-system.

Canon have just spent little time or money on their focusing outside of dual pixel. If they still sell the stuff no point in doing so. Point a Canon at anything but the most hard defined cumulus cloud in the sky and it will just not get focus which shows why video is a problem without a fixed reference to latch on to. With my Olympus and Panasonic kit no problem. Olympus used to be awful and the XZ-1 video was beyond awful to the point you had to admire it but Olympus have worked on it. Also the two small centre points or everything modes are rudimentary. Possibly the G5X II has improved on this but I doubt it.

I cannot recall ever having problems with focussing on clouds with Canon camera's. I would have made a few test shots for you if it wasn't a cloudless day today.

I simply don't get your problem. You are obviously not satisfied with your Canon G3X but you do like your Panasonic and Olympus camera's. Then sell your G3X and use your Panasonic or Olympus instead. And if you like something more compact buy a Panasonic TZ200 or whatever it is called in your region.

I did have a G3X and I sold it because of its limited focusing modes were not what I wanted for such a long zoom.

I have a G5X currently and just because I am critical of certain aspects of it performance does not mean I want to sell it or do not like it for its overall functionality. I do not get this idea if you use a camera you have to praise absolutely every aspect of what it does or sell it and with people getting upset and saying they don't get your problem if you do discuss these issues.

The focusing on your camera suits you so no more to be said. For myself the focusing on the G5X is OK but not up with the rest but everything else is fine.

I never said that you have to praise ever aspect of a camera or sell it. I also think you have the right to complain about certain aspects you don't like. (and you did in your own treat so I don't understand  why you have to bring it up again) But if a camera has one or more issues that hinder you in your photography (like the issue you had with the G3X) I think you should sell it. (And you did)

I use to own a Sony RX100 III but I did not like the jpegs it produced. So I sold it and bought a Canon instead.

The G7X III and the G5X II had the same problem witch Canon (partially) fixed with a firmware update.

As for the G9X III I don’t expect much of it. If they will release a G9 X III they will probably release it when they run out of Digic 7 processors and the improvements will be the standard Digic 8 improvements: higher fps in continues modes, 4k video, vertical video and a usb-c connector.

I never use continues mode, the video can be 4k but if the focus isn’t good…. And I always use USB charging but if Canon puts in a USB-C socket then a PD-charger is probably required which doesn’t add to the user experience in my opinion.

But I hope I’m wrong.
