It's not really the camera.  Its the glass.  And your distance.

You really need a longer focal length lens for sports type shots.  The 55-200 is a good choice.  I had it but sold it only to get the 50-140.  Though now I wish I still had it.  It is a great lens!  Not the fastest but sharp as a tack.

However, you need to get closer to your subject.  Smaller subjects in a shot will never be sharper than larger ones.  Only because smaller objects use less pixels.  Larger ones more. The more you can use, the sharper they can be.  I mean, take a headshot of someone and compare that to cropping in on a full length shot to just the head and shoulders.  The first headshot only will be obviously sharper.

Even with the lens you have now.  If you can get closer, the objects will be shaper right off the bat.
