Sony syncing

Vintage auto bellows that had the twin cable releases ask for a solution like that when a digital camera replaces the original camera. At least when there is a vintage auto lens at the front of that auto bellows. Reversed or normal.

With a native lens of the digital camera at the front of a vintage bellows the solution can be electronic. Five years ago I made a DIY solution for that: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57104623

Meanwhile I saw a (better) commercial version.

A radio controlled solenoid on the auto bellows mechanism would be an ideal solution if it closes the aperture fast enough. I use Cactus radio releases for flashes and the camera and have to think about it. A stop gap solution is a cable release where the thumb key presses at the end of its stroke the radio release button .

Pretty easy to use a flash sync signal... if there is one. It turns out that Sony doesn't do a flash sync signal when in fully electronic shutter mode, probably because they say you shouldn't use flash in that mode. Honestly, I don't see any reason not to allow flash; you'd just have a max sync speed longer than 1/30s. Keep in mind that the flash sync is timed to correspond to when the curtains are both open, not the start of movement of the first curtain... so it's actually a bit late.

The E mount lens protocol is still a bit of a mystery. There is this summary:

http://camera-wiki.org/wiki/Sony_E_mount_reverse_engineer

The biggest issue I know of is that Sony's focus algorithms have changed multiple times over the years, and they've changed in part in terms of what behaviors the lens is expected to deliver, so reverse engineering of the protocol for one focus mode and model does not guarantee support of any other. If the newer models continued to support PlayMemories apps (and hence OpenMemories), perhaps we would have gotten more control over the lens protocol interactions... but no.

Probably the best method Sony actually supports is using their JSON remote control protocol. You could fairly easily have a little controller than fires both the camera and adapter actions....
